I think aborigine artist often spends more time selecting and treating the bark and making his palette and brushes than he does on the actual painting process.

I learned that Greeny had passed on only a few days ago when I looked at the Mbantua newsletter and saw that he was referred to as 'the late'. I knew he was really sick - the last two times i was in the Mbantua galleries in Darwin and Alice Springs I asked after him and heard he was ill. I bought my Greeny Purvis painting 11 years ago - the first time I went to Alice Springs. I trawled up and down the Mall, wondering how you choose amongst the lovely art works, which all looked so great. Then I saw the Greeny work I subsequently bought and realised how you choose - the work just spoke to me. I have a photo of Greeny holding up the big work I bought - he's mostly obscured, but you can see his hands and the famous hat you mention Dale! It's been hanging pride of place in my house now for 11 years and not a day goes past when i don't walk past it and think, 'damn, that's a fine painting'. I'm very sad he has passed on, but like all great artists his legacy lives on. Cheers Pam

I have question. We know that economic stress reduces the amount that art collectors are willing to pay for art. Does this reduction pass through to the artists? Are they getting less for their work? Or are the decreases being absorbed by the dealers and reps?

I am curious because, as bad as lower prices are for the distribution system, poor artists living on the subsistence levels of single art sales must be in deep despair. Righto?
